L'Alfa Romeo Alfetta fut été lancé en 1972, avec pour première version un moteur 1,8 litres de quatres cylindres en tricorps quatre portes, cinq places tricorps saloon ( « Berlina » en italien) conçu en interne par le Centro Stile Alfa Romeo. L'avant était caractérisé par deux phares de taille égale connectés visuellement à un bouclier central Alfa Romeo étroit par trois barres chromées, tandis que les feux arrière comportaient trois éléments carrés.
